Problem solving for Artists
The CEO is involved in working through a number current complaints in which artists feel they are disadvantaged in their business relations. The cases include:
- A group of Artists in Alice Springs who are unclear about their business relations with their Dealer. Works have been taken from the Artists on consignment without agreement on fundamental issues of commission and pricing.
- An Indigenous arts organisation in WA where the stakeholders feel an outside organisation is exerting undue influence.
- An NT Artist who felt her cultural heritage had been misrepresented by a Dealer.
In each case the Code is assisting Artists in finding solutions. The first intention is to remedy a problem where it might be affecting the welfare of Artists.
It’s important to note a number of the players involved in the scenarios mention here are not signatories to the Code. Nevertheless, the Code is in a position to exert considerable influence. It has clearly articulated what reasonable professional standards are, and it benefits from a national supporter base that underpins its credibility.
