Meriam and Kaurareg

Francoise Lane is a descendant of the Meriam and Kaurareg peoples of Zenadth Kes and who lives and works on Yindiji Country (Gordonvale, Far North Queensland). Lane’s practice draws upon her family’s cultural values of respecting and caring for land, sea, kin and community. Her creative practice straddles the intersection of art and design with a focus on Indigenous themes and values. With a background in built environment as an interior designer, she is a multidisciplinary creative whose practice includes curation, visual art, sculptural furniture, fashion and textile designs. She has an interest in supporting community arts and has worked collaboratively with Indigenous arts organisations and independent artists on creative projects. More recently Lane was the Artistic Director of Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (2022 – 2024). Her exploration of new approaches in the creation, understanding and valuing artworks in the genre of contemporary Indigenous art has seen her awarded the 2022 HIAP Helsinki Residency from the Australia Council for the Arts. She is a 2016 British Council Accelerate Alumni, 2018 Edinburgh Creative Collaborations Award finalist and NIFA Collaborations Award (2022) nominee. Lane is a Indigenous Art Code Board member and inaugural NSW GA State Design Review Panelist.
